Cleaning Wallpaper

Posted by | Posted in Home & Family | Posted on 15-09-2009

After installing wallpaper, you can get the best of it by keeping it well-maintained. Making sure that your wallpaper is taken care of helps in retaining its colors and lengthens its life. Taking care of your wallpaper, needless to say, entails cleaning it every once in a while.

Most wallpaper manufacturers include instructions on how to clean wallpaper; they label their products as either “washable” or “scrubbable.” While most of today’s wallpapers are made of coated vinyl — which makes cleaning a tad easier — some wallpapers still require meticulous cleaning measures to ensure optimum preservation of its fabrics. The cleaning process also varies, depending on whatever stains you have on your wallpaper. If you see any spot or stain, it is best that you clean them immediately before the stain settles deep into the fabric.

If it is on kitchen wallpaper or laundry room wallpaper border, you can wipe it off immediately with a wet cloth. Wallpapers installed in high-activity and high-moisture rooms like these are more prone to stains. Majority of kitchen wallpaper, laundry room wallpaper border, and those used for children’s rooms are made of vinyl, which are more resistant to water and stains, and a lot durable than those made of paper.

It is important to remember that cleaning vinyl-based wallpaper is different from cleaning a paper-based one.
As mentioned earlier, manufacturers have a manual on how to clean wallpaper, but here are some general guidelines in keeping wallpaper spic-and-span:

For simple dust and dirt:

1. Line the floor with plastic to prevent any damage from excess water and spillage;
2. Whisk away any solid particles of dust and dirt with a brush;
3. Add a mild detergent to a bucket 2/3 full of water, enough to produce some bubbles;
4. With a sponge, dip and then squeeze out excess water and wipe the wall from top to bottom;
5. Rinse sponge constantly and repeat step 4 until the whole wall is covered;
6. With a dry towel, wipe excess moisture from the wall.

The same process can be done on kitchen wallpaper, laundry room wallpaper border, and other vinyl-based wallpaper. For stubborn stains, here’s what you need to do:

For crayons:

1. Rub Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on the stained area, that alone is enough to remove any crayon spot;
2. If there is no Mr. Clean Magic Eraser around, wet a damp cloth with a mild detergent (do not use strong abrasives as they can damage the wallpaper’s fabric and colors);
3. Towel the wall dry.

For marker stains:

If the marker is washable and the stain is on vinyl-based wallpaper, like kitchen wallpaper or laundry room wallpaper border, a simple buff with a wet towel can remove the stain, otherwise, you need to do the following:

1. Clean the spot with Mr. Clean Magic Eraser;
2. If Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is not available, apply a paste made of water and baking soda to the stain and to the towel;
3. Rub the stained area GENTLY;
4. If the baking soda paste fails; apply alcohol and rub gently (Test alcohol on a spare strip of wallpaper first; alcohol can cause discoloration and major damage to most wallpapers).

Stains that have already embedded themselves into the wallpaper are hard to remove and might require the use of solvents. For your protection, always wear gloves to protect your hands.

Choosing Wood Blinds For Your Home: A Room By Room Guide

Posted by | Posted in Home & Family | Posted on 15-09-2009

If you have been considering changing the window treatments ion your home, then you should definitely look into the growing popularity of wood blinds. These blinds come in a great many styles and materials, and are precisely suited to fit any decor. When you add wood blinds to your home, it says to the world that you have exquisite style and taste. But how does one go about choosing just the right style of blinds for their home?

Well, that all depends of which room of the house they are being pot into. You can have a different style of wood blinds in each room of your home, and still be at the height of interior fashion. Take a look at this room by room guide which our interior design experts have put together for you, in an effort to help make the process of choosing wood blinds for your home that much easier.

Horizontal Blinds

Horizontal wood blinds are beautiful window treatments that are designed to look exactly like Venetian blinds, but made with wooden slats. These blinds are excellent in rooms where more light is preferable, such as in the kitchen and bathroom. If you are choosing horizontal wood blinds for your kitchen or bathroom, it is important that you choose blinds that have been specially treated to withstand the mold and mildew that can occur on untreated blinds due to the high levels of moisture in these rooms. There are several different typos of wood used in horizontal blinds, but the most popular are red cedar, and white oak or pine.

Vertical Blinds

Vertical wood blinds are the perfect choice for a room that should be well-lit, such as a living room, or dining room. These blinds can be easily pulled to the side of the window, to allow full sunlight in; and easily closed tight at night for the utmost in privacy. Vertical wood blinds, or hanging blinds as they are also known, are also quite excellent for offices as they allow the most light through the window, when pulled off to the side.

Roman Shades

For bedrooms and nurseries, where the ability to darken a room is important, the Roman Shade style of wood blinds is preferred. These wood blinds cover the entire window when down, and are opaque so as to provide the most light blockage. These blinds are rather stylish when raised, as well; as they fold accordion-style, slats together.

Bamboo Shades

If you are looking for privacy, but still want to let the light in, then bamboo shades are just the thing. These wood blinds are made with only the finest bamboo, and roll as they are raised. When down, these wood blinds are thin enough to still allow plenty of light to enter a room; yet closely enough woven to provide the utmost in privacy. If you prefer to have curtains on your windows for darkness, these bamboo shades are excellent window treatments for bedrooms; although, we do not recommend them for nurseries.

Slider Panels

For the utmost in room darkening, try slider panels for rooms such as media rooms. These wood blinds come in a variety of darker wood, including dark walnut bamboo; and are the ideal treatment for windows in rooms with floor to ceiling windows and sliding glass doors. Backed with an opaque fabric for maximum density, sliding wood blinds can be used not only as window treatments; but can also be installed to divide rooms, or to create closure on rooms with extra-wide door-less entrances.

As you can see, there are a great many different styles of wood blinds that you can choose from, in a variety of different materials. Choose a wood that matches your furniture, and add instant elegance to any room with wood blinds.

Choosing the Right Metal Curtain Pole

Posted by | Posted in Home & Family | Posted on 15-09-2009

Whether you are thinking about redoing the whole room or just getting a hint of class and elegance into an existing one, think about everything you can do with a metal curtain pole. If you are in a situation where you can invest a little bit of cash into the look of a room, you might want to do so with a metal curtain pole; there are several different looks to choose from, and if you know where to look, the selection is nearly endless.

The first thing to think about when you are considering a metal curtain pole is the look of the curtain themselves. What sort of appearance do you want them to have? Are they filmy and white, giving a light, airy feel to the room, or are they heavier, giving everything a bit more of a somber air? When you are considering getting a curtain rod to go along with your curtains, think about what images and impressions you get from the curtains themselves.

The second thing you should think about with regards to new metal curtain poles is the look of the room itself. If the room in question is very masculine, with lots of dark wood paneling and heavy leather furniture, this type of accoutrement is perfect, but if the room is more feminine in nature, with lots of light, open spaces and paler wood, you might need to look for a good curtain rod to complete this picture. For the latter situation, consider getting a particularly slender rod, one with some scroll work or a flowering design at the end.

When you are thinking about purchasing metal curtain poles, make sure that you buy enough to complete the room. Matching curtain rods can tie the look of a room together, but having something like one fancy curtain rod and two plain in the same area can make the room look ungrounded and even cluttered and unplanned. Take a look at the room in question and make sure that you have a good idea of what will tie it together in terms of motif and composition.

Getting metal curtain poles can be a great way to get what you need out of the look of the room. When you are looking for ways to liven up the look of your living situation, don’t do what so many people do and simply decorate at eye-level. Take care of the details like the curtain rods and make sure your home has both a comfortable and collected feeling to it!

Choosing The Right Materials For Your New Countertops

Posted by | Posted in Home & Family | Posted on 15-09-2009

There are a number of different materials that you can use to make your kitchen counters with, but depending on your budget and the look that you want for your kitchen, you will end up having to choose one over the other.

The higher end material that use for your counters and the rest of your kitchen, the more value remodeling your kitchen will bring to your home. There are a few different options that you can choose from, but one of the most popular things going is granite and other stone.

Natural and engineered stone has become an extremely popular material for use in the kitchen and it, like any other material, has its perks and its drawbacks. One of the bad things about granite and other kinds of stone is the fact that they are porous and have to be sealed.

They do not handle heat very well and are stained fairly easily. It is also expensive and if you do not have a good sized budget for your remodeling job, you may want to opt for a lower end material. One of the perks of stone is that it makes your kitchen look very streamlined and modern.

Another material that you could have installed as countertops is stainless steel. This has been used in the kitchens of restaurants for many years and it can be molded into any shape that you can think of, so if you want an industrialized look for your kitchen, this may be the way to go.

It is pretty expensive, though, so make sure you have some money to spend before thinking about this for your counters.

Laminate can be used for kitchen counters, too, but unfortunately this is a pretty low end material and it shows it.

It is cheap and chips, cracks, and scratches easily and once water gets to the wood chips underneath the plastic covering, it will start to swell up and your counter will no longer be the smooth surface it was.

Ceramic tile is another material that you can use and it is about the cheapest that you can buy, but the options when it comes to creativity are almost endless.

You can combine different colors of tile and make your own patterns with them, but the grout that you have to put between the tile has to be sealed to keep it from getting dirty and it will have to be sealed more than once over the years to keep this attribute.

Choosing the Right Color for your Furniture

Posted by | Posted in Home & Family | Posted on 15-09-2009

Furniture can often be a subjective thing, we choose what we like (and not necessarily what others like!).

When you have considered all the normal aspects of your choice, such as style and size (taking into consideration both the room and your home) you will need to start looking at the color choice as well.

The color of your furniture needs to match the color of your home and the room you intend to place it in.

The first thing you need to consider is what kind or style of furniture you are wanting to purchase wood, leather or material. Woods come in different colors, due to it’s natural color and the coating that works with it.

From there, you need to decide what color the covering material or cushions might be. In all these cases, you will need to know a few things about color to help you make the right decision.

The different names of color in the furniture world is in line with the names of color in the world of art. If you’re an artist, you’re at an advantage. If not, there are some simple tips that can help you.

Some of the terms you will hear interior designers and professionals in furniture talk about are primary, secondary and complementary colors.

There’s an easy way to work this out, and it involves a triangle. Your primary colors always refer to red, blue and yellow. Colors like white and black are referred to as ’shading’ colors, and adding them to any of these colors simply makes the shading lighter or darker.

So, by labeling the corners of a triangle with these primary colors, you can begin to easily see what the rest of these terms refer to.

Firstly, between red and yellow on the triangle you can label ‘orange’, being a mix of these two primary colors. Between blue and yellow label green and between red and blue label violet.

These are what is known as the ’secondary’ colors. Secondly, complementary colors refer to those colors which are directly opposite to each other, such as blue and orange.

Blue and orange are complementary colors. This is a marvelous tip to help decide what colors to furnish with straight away.

The other terms you might hear about are ‘warm’ and ‘cool’ colors. Warm colors refer to any color that creates a focal point (such as yellow, red or orange) while cool colors obviously are the opposite (usually used by painters for the background art).

Cool colors would include green, violet and blue. You will see that this cuts the triangle in half, and immediately helps you to decide what color of furniture to choose.

Do you want the piece to be a focal point, or be in the background compared to something else? Creating too many focal points (warm colors) can make a room feel cluttered and less spacious, whereas choosing too many cool colors will make a room feel dull.

While it may be mostly up to personal tastes, these are important considerations that need to be taken into account.

They not only adorn walls of mansions and museums, but now make their way to regular houses and offices as design centerpieces.

Buying large wall clocks is never a problem, because there are so many different options available to go with the existing look of any room. There are many different kinds of large wall clocks. Children’s Area Rugs

Posted by | Posted in Home & Family | Posted on 15-09-2009

There’s nothing better than choosing an area rug for your child’s room. It is fun and you will encounter many bright colors and fun patterns. It does not matter what age your child is at the moment, you can choose an area rug for their bedroom that will be able to grow with them over the years as long as you avoid the common pitfalls with decorating a child’s room.

If you want to create a themed room, you will be able to find many quality area rugs that will be able to fit into your theme. If you are making a western themed room, the perfect addition to this theme is to get a leather rug that is dyed and shaped just like a cowhide. This will bring in a little bit of the Wild West right into your child’s bedroom. And if you are decorating your little girl’s room like an English garden with roses and butterflies, think about a bright green shag rug to mimic the grass. But if you want to rug to outlast the theme, you may want to avoid getting rugs with cartoon characters or patterns that are specific for an age group.

It may take some thinking, but you can get a rug that will fit into a themed room for the time being, but also be able to grow with the child. Most of the time, solid colors work best for this type of long lasting style. You also want to make sure that you are buying a quality rug so that it can stand up to the high traffic of children in and out of the room, toys being moved across the surface, and any spills that may happen with toys, nail polish, or food.

If you really want the rug to last throughout the years, take your child rug shopping with you. This way, you can both put your heads together in order to get the rug that they want, while you get a quality product that you want. It is easy to shop online with your child so that they can see all of the different options.

When it comes to the materials that the area rugs are made out of, you can get something that is soft, yet still very durable to stand up to the energy and rambunctious moods of children. But if you children have any sever allergies, products such as shag are not recommended because they can hold in dust and other allergens that can cause breathing difficulties. Children with allergies should have a short pile area rug in their rooms instead so that it is easy to clean and will not hold as much dust as other types of materials.

Make sure that any rug you buy for a child’s room is easy to clean. This way, you won’t have to deal with stains that won’t come out or rugs that need to have special cleaning methods in order to remove stains.

Changing your bathroom

Posted by | Posted in Home & Family | Posted on 15-09-2009

About bathrooms Because replacing your bathroom is a task that will have a lot of influence in your daily live for a few weeks, it is probably not something you will do for pleasure. But think of the result and it will all be worthwhile. This article will guide you to a relaxing and refreshing bathroom! Bathroom Planning It makes a lot of sense to assess the needs of you and your family before you start planning your bathroom. Are you single, living together or having a family with different age groups? All these things matter when you choose your fixtures, storage, flooring and wall coverings. Families will use a bathroom very intensely at all times of the day. Especially in the morning members of the family might need to use the bathroom at the same time. Young children will appreciate toys they can play with in the bath and stools to stand on when brushing their teeth and all these things will need space, so plan this carefully. When you’re single or living together, you don’t need to worry about storage that much. Get a few smart storage boxes for your toiletries and even the most compact bathroom will look clean and uncluttered. You can opt for more luxurious wall coverings and flooring, because it will get less wear and tear. Bathroom Design There are a lot of different styles to be found in bathroom fixtures, so that you can choose the style that reflects the rest of your home. In bathrooms, everything is possible, so let your fantasy loose on gleaming taps, top end vanity units, whirlpool baths, funky toilet seats and tiles that make a statement. Colour is a keynote in the design of your bathroom. Fixtures are available in a lot of colours. Although white goes with most of the styles, if you really want something different, a coloured fixture might be something for you. How about a frosted glass basin with a chrome pedestal or a shower enclosure made of glass bricks? Wood is also a successful material to use in the bathroom. Not only bath, shower or toilet design or colour have influence on the feel of your bathroom, taps, shower fittings and levers do too. They will really set off your design and take your bathroom to another level. There are a lot of designs available, from Victorian taps and overhead showers to state-of-the-art chrome shower mixers or levers. Buying a Bathroom Set a budget for your bathroom: how much can you spend maximum on your fittings? Bear in mind that when you buy at a DIY-shed but can’t install the bathroom yourself, that you have to hire somebody to do it for you. Try to get a few good quotes from recommended plumbers before you start the project. Also make sure you list the possible redecorating costs. The fittings might be the
first step to your new bathroom, but your walls and flooring will make all the difference. Accessories and storage are the just as important to create the look that you want. Include them in your budget as well. If you decide to put your new fittings in the same place as your old ones, then measure them before you go to look for a replacement. That way you know that your new bath will fit. Check that the shower tray you’re buying has a non-slip surface. Check with your plumber that the drainage can take the amount of water your shower is producing. Nothing is worse than having an overflowing tray. And always buy the enclosure and the tray as a set. This way you know that the enclosure fits to the shower tray. And last but not least, try to match your taps and levers with the style of your bathroom. If you have chosen romantic fittings then ultramodern will just not do!

Top Planning Tips

• Plan your bathroom so that all the members of your family will enjoy it. Keep the safety of your children in mind when choosing your flooring and lighting.

• Keep the existing service points in mind when planning your bathroom as rewiring and re-plumbing takes a lot of time and money.

• Think about what you want to do with your window. Maximise the amount of light that comes in without having to suffer from glare.

• Plan enough different types of storage. Shelving for products for every day use, cupboards for occasionally used products and towels, and bins for laundry. In families, plan also storage for typical children’s bathroom accessories and toys.

• Decide whether you have the space to install a separate shower enclosure or a shower above the bath. A separate shower will take more space, but two people can use the bathroom at the same time.

• For larger families, a second cloakroom would come in very handy, especially in the morning when everybody needs to get ready at the same time.
